Places to Visit in Rwanda

Kigali City

Kigali City, the gateway into Rwanda is undeniably the most awe-inspiring place to visit in the country. This Tourist hub is known for its warm climate, lush rolling hills, vibrant nightlife, cultural and historical sites and many other amazing things that will take your breath away. Some of the must-see things in Kigali City are the Kigali genocide memorial site, Presidential Museum, Ivuka Arts Center and other craft markets for typical African items.

Volcanoes National Park

Visiting Rwanda without going to Volcanoes National Park is like visiting Paris without seeing the famous Eiffel Tower. This 160 square kilometer National Park is found in the Northern Province and is adjacent to Uganda’s Mgahinga National Park as well as Congo’s Virunga National Park.
Volcanoes National Park is famous for being the home to the endangered Mountain gorillas and visiting this Park gives tourists the golden opportunity of meeting face to face with these sought-after primate species.

Mountain gorillas are however not the only attractions to expect in Volcanoes National Park but also other mammals such as golden monkeys, elephants, bushbucks, buffaloes, giant forest hogs and many others. There are also more than 178 species of birds inhabiting the forests of this Park. Some of the activities to enjoy when you visit Volcanoes National Park are Mountain gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, and Dian Fossey gravesite hike, volcano hiking, and birding among others.

Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park is another place to visit in Rwanda and is found in the south-western corner of Rwanda, spanning for over 1000 square kilometers. Nyungwe is one of Africa’s largest Montane Forest National Parks with over 70 species of mammals including the 13 species of primates (like Chimpanzees, Angolan Colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and Red-tailed monkeys), buffaloes and many others.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is also rich in birdlife with more than 300 species of birds including the Albertine Rift endemics. For tourists visiting Nyungwe Forest National Park, activities such as Chimpanzee tracking, Colobus monkey tracking, hiking, and birding are available all year round.

Akagera National Park

Situated in the north-eastern side of Rwanda is the vast Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only Savannah National Park extending for over 1122 square kilometers of mainly savannah plains, forest, wetland, and lake. If your dream safari is seeing the big five animals (elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, and Rhinos), giraffes, zebras, topis, Kobs, elands, waterbucks or even primates, then Akagera National Park is the most fascinating place to visit in Rwanda.

Another reason making Akagera National Park one of the best places to visit in Rwanda is the fact that it offers shelter to over 520 species of birds (three-quarters of the country’s total bird species) thus making it a wonderful birding destination in Rwanda. Activities to enjoy during your visit to Akagera National Park include game drives, bird watching, nature walks, boat cruises, community tours, and many others.

Other magnificent places to visit in Rwanda include Rwanda’s Lakes, Genocide Memorial sites, National Museums, and many other interesting places.
